Ethiopia Ranks Second in Africa in London Olympic

The country got all the three gold medals by its female athletes while its male athletes failed to get one. Out of the total seven medals the women claimed five.

Ethiopians lost their final hope of getting gold in men’s marathon at the concluding day of the London Olympic 2012 when the unexpected Ugandan Athlete Stephen Kiprotich won the country’s second-ever Olympic gold medal.



Ethiopian team completes the London Olympic ranking second in Africa and twenty-fifth in the world by grabbing a total of seven medals three gold, one silver and three bronze medals.


The country got all the three gold medals by its female athletes while its male athletes failed to get one. Out of the total seven medals the women claimed five.

Ethiopians lost their final hope of getting gold in men’s marathon at the concluding day of the London Olympic 2012 when the unexpected Ugandan Athlete Stephen Kiprotich won the country’s second-ever Olympic gold medal.

After Tirunesh Dibaba paved the way claiming gold medal in 10,000 meters, Tiki Gelana in marathon and Meseret Defar in 5,000 meters also followed the suit. In addition, Tirunesh has also got bronze in women’s 5,000 meters.

Ethiopia has also got a medal in women’s 3000 steeplechase for the first time in Olympic when Sofia Assefa claimed the silver.

Including the highly expected the previous Olympic 5,000 and 10,000 champion, Kenenisa Bekele, Ethiopian male athletes were not lucky to claim gold in the just concluded London Olympic. This time around Mo Farah of Britain shined grabbing two gold medals in 5,000 and 10,000 meters. Dejen Gebremeskel of Ethiopia got silver in 5,000 metres while Kenenisa’s brother Tariku Bekele won the bronze.

South Africa completes the games ranking first in the continent and twenty-fourth in the world with a total of six medals but three two silver and one bronze. Kenya also concluded London Olympic ranking third in Africa and twenty-eighth in the world with a total of eleven medals – two gold, four silver and five bronze.

The official record of the London Olympic shows that the United States stood first with a total of one hundred and four medals of which forty-six are gold. China follows with eighty-seven medals of which thirty-eight are gold and the host nation –the United Kingdom – becomes third winning a total of sixty-five medals of which twenty nine are gold.
