Hailemariam: Gov't taking measures to combat diabetes
Tuesday, 01 November 2011 Speaking at the opening of a three-day International Conference on Diabetes on Tuesday, Hailemariam said the government has been urged to sign-up to commitments, concrete actions and measurable targets to tackle Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs).
The four prominent NCDs include diabetes, cancers, cardiovascular and chronic respiratory diseases. The five-year Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP) also gives priority to maternal as well as to pre and post natal child health, Hailemariam said.
It also attaches due attention to halting and reversing the spread of major communicable diseases, including HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria.The International Diabetes Federation recently released figures confirming that diabetes epidemic continues to worsen, he said.The global diabetes map is changing rapidly and currently an estimated 366 million people have diabetes in the world.Some 4.6 million deaths are attributed to diabetes and healthcare spending on diabetes recently reached nearly half a trillion USD per annum, Hailemariam noted.The meeting on diabetes and its complications is timely as it provides a great opportunity to update the healthcare professionals in the latest developments in the field, he said. Ethiopian Diabetes Association President, Dr. Ahmed Reja for his part said experts and scientists from Europe, USA and Africa will present lectures and conduct workshop on modern and practical management of diabetes(Ertagov.com)
