President Obama telephones Acting Prime Minister Haile Mariam (Aug 28, 2012)


Following messages of condolence from US President Barack Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the Permanent Representative of the US to the United Nations, Susan Rice, President Obama also spoke by telephone to Acting Prime Minister Hailemariam on Thursday evening. The White House said that Prime Minister Meles would be remembered for his contributions to peace and security in Africa. It said President Obama pledged continued U.S. "partnership" with Ethiopia, noting that under Meles Ethiopia had been a strong U.S. ally. The White House said that President Obama had called on Acting Prime Minister Hailemariam to "to use his leadership to enhance the Ethiopian government's support for development, democracy, human rights and regional security." The Acting Prime Minister told President Obama that the transition was taking place in a stable manner in accordance with the constitution. He expressed the desire of the new leadership to further strengthen the excellent bilateral relations between Ethiopia and the US that developed under Prime Minister Meles. Acting Prime Minister Hailmariam particularly emphasized the need to build on the fruitful relations in the areas of health and education. He also noted the importance of implementing the most recent G-8 decisions regarding food security under the “New Alliance for Food security “coalition. With regard to the bilateral dialogue between the two countries on issues of human rights and good governance, Ato Hailemariam and President Obama discussed possible ways to introduce implementation of new procedures.
