Ethiopian defense force honored for outstanding contributions
Addis Ababa, Friday, 23 September 2011 - Interfaith Peace Building Initiative, an organization working on peace, honored the Ethiopian Defense Force for its outstanding contributions to world peace. The Initiative on Wednesday marked World Peace Day for the 9th time. In its 36th general assembly 30 years ago, the United Nations unanimously designated September 21st for World Peace Day. Interfaith Peace Building Initiative which has an observer position in the United Nations has been celebrating the day with various assortments for eight years now. The Initiative has also been honoring individuals and institutions with outstanding contributions to world peace. The Initiative, while celebrating the 9th World Peace Day on Wednesday honored the Ethiopian Defense Force as its topmost awardee in recognition of its outshining contributions to world peace. Chairperson of the Initiative and representative of the United Nations Economic Commission for African Religious Unity, honorable Mussie Haile lauded the Ethiopian Defense Force for its continued commitment to global peace. Head of office with the Ministry of Defense, Colonel Gebru Gebretsadqan said the Ethiopian Defense Force will pursue its peacekeeping mission in a strengthened manner. The award will give it more energy for more achievements, he said.
At the event, contributions of Ethiopian Defense Force to world peace were reflected upon. The country's peacekeeping mission which started in South Korea over six decades back was later extended to Congo. Lately, the Ethiopian Defense Force committed itself to peace in Rwanda, Burundi, and Liberia. The Force maintained its integrity in rehabilitating victims of conflicts in those countries.The day saw UN's Economic Commission for Africa as the 2nd awardee for peace. Liberian president Elen Johnson Sirleaf got the third award for her contributions to peace in Africa.(ERTA)
