Wednesday, 23 May 2012 Ethiopia is to inaugurate a 30 million birr road sector database system in the next few weeks after completing transferring its data to the data base according to Ethiopian Roads Authority.
The project is part of ERA’s development program to modernize and transform its initiative. The development program has 36 projects, including standardizing various communications, including correspondences such as memos, emails, a road history database, online status for projects, a data warehouse for easy extraction of historical data on the existing roads, research and development.
It is expected that the new database system will support the monitoring and decision-making for the management by supplying consolidated information through a performance appraisal system, tender analysis, and cost estimates for each project said Mulugeta Demisse, Director of the Quality Assurance and Inspection Directorate.
The database will offer an online databank to facilitate the easy availability of data for the sector according to Mulugeta. The database can be accessed from anywhere to follow up on the progress of each project allowing for easy evaluation and follow up by the quality assurance and inspection department he noted.
It is expected that the database will be used by officials of the authority as well as stakeholders in the sector such as contractors and consultants.
The International Development Agency of the World Bank contributed 18 million birr to finance the project. The rest of the funding for the project was covered by the ERA from the 81 billion budget for the Road Sector Development Program IV.
The WB is also giving technical and consultancy support for the agency according to officials.
